Red Flags to Watch for When Choosing Wedding Catering
Warning signs to spot before you book, from missing insurance to unclear quotes and vague cancellation terms.

Most wedding caterers do a good job. These are the warning signs that suggest you should pause before paying a deposit.
Warning signs in the quote
- A price that is far below every other quote, with no explanation.
- Travel, setup, equipment or staff listed as extras only after you ask.
- No itemised breakdown of what you are paying for.
- Pressure to pay in full immediately.
Warning signs on credentials
- No food hygiene certificate or rating you can check.
- Reluctance to show public liability insurance.
- No clear allergen process. Every dish should be labelled and a matrix available.
- Alcohol service with no licence arrangement.
Warning signs in how they communicate
- Slow or evasive replies before you have even booked.
- Vague answers about who will actually be on site.
- No written contract, or terms that only favour the caterer.
- No plan for bad weather or equipment failure.
What good looks like
A clear written quote, named credentials, a stated backup plan and plain contract terms. For us that means all-inclusive pricing with no hidden fees, backup equipment at every event, and the owner on site.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check a caterer's food hygiene rating?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland you can search the Food Standards Agency's rating scheme online. You can also ask to see their certificate.
Is a very cheap quote always a red flag?
Not always, but ask what is left out. If staff, travel or equipment are missing, the true cost may be similar to higher quotes.
What should be in a wedding catering contract?
Date, venue, menu, guest numbers, total price, deposit and balance dates, cancellation and postponement terms, and what is included.
